Midjourney Review: Is It Worth $30/Month in 2026?

Midjourney creates stunning AI images. But at $30/month (standard plan), is it worth it—or are you better off with cheaper alternatives?

I’ve been a Midjourney subscriber for 18 months. I’ve generated over 5,000 images. Here’s the brutally honest review.

Bottom line: Worth it if you create visual content regularly. Not worth it if you only need images occasionally.

What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an AI image generator. You type a text description (called a “prompt”), and it creates images based on that description.

Example prompt: “A cozy coffee shop in Tokyo, warm lighting, morning atmosphere, photorealistic”

Midjourney generates 4 variations in ~60 seconds. Pick your favorite, upscale it to high resolution, done.

What’s “Fast Mode”? Images generate in ~60 seconds.
What’s “Relax Mode”? Images generate in 5-10 minutes, but unlimited usage.

Most people choose: Standard ($30) for the unlimited Relax Mode.

What I Love About Midjourney

1. The Image Quality is Insane

Midjourney consistently produces the most aesthetically pleasing images of any AI generator. It just looks… good.

Compare Midjourney to competitors on the same prompt:

• DALL-E 3: More literal, less artistic
• Stable Diffusion: Powerful but inconsistent
• Midjourney: Nails the vibe every time

For blog headers, social media graphics, presentation slides—Midjourney rarely disappoints.

2. It Understands Style

You can specify artistic styles and Midjourney nails them:

• “Pixar animation style”
• “1990s anime aesthetic”
• “Film noir photography”
• “Watercolor painting”

It understands these references better than competitors.

3. Version 6 is a Game-Changer

The latest model (v6, released late 2025) dramatically improved:

• Text in images: Finally readable (mostly)
• Photorealism: Scary good
• Hands: No longer nightmare fuel
• Prompt understanding: More accurate

V6 fixed most of my complaints from earlier versions.

4. Upscaling is Excellent

The “Subtle” and “Creative” upscale options give you control. Need a clean enlargement? Subtle. Want more details added? Creative.

Output resolution: Up to 2048x2048 (higher with additional upscaling).

5. Community & Inspiration

The Midjourney Discord is full of incredible artists. Scrolling the showcase gives you ideas and shows what’s possible.

What Frustrates Me About Midjourney

1. Discord-Only Interface

You can’t use Midjourney on a website. Everything happens in Discord via commands.

Why this sucks:

• Discord is chaotic if you’re in public channels
• Managing images across conversations is messy
• Not beginner-friendly
• No searchable library of your past work (without organizing manually)

Update: Midjourney recently launched a web interface (alpha), but it’s limited to subscribers. It’s better, but still rough.

2. No Editing After Generation

You can’t say “make the sky darker” or “remove the person in the background.” You generate, upscale, and export. Any tweaks require external editing tools.

Competitors like DALL-E offer inpainting and outpainting. Midjourney doesn’t.

3. Prompting is Still a Skill

Great results require good prompts. You’ll spend time learning:

• Effective keywords (“cinematic,” “dramatic lighting”)
• Aspect ratios (--ar 16:9)
• Style references
• Negative prompts (what to avoid)

It’s not hard, but there’s a learning curve.

4. Relax Mode Can Be SLOW

When Midjourney is busy, Relax Mode can take 10-15 minutes per image. Fine for batch work, frustrating if you need something now.

Fast Mode is capped at 15 hours/month (Standard plan). That’s roughly 250-300 images.

5. Commercial Licensing is Confusing

You own the images you create (on paid plans), but:

• Must have a paid subscription when generating
• Can’t use images generated on free trial commercially
• Corporate use ($120/month Mega plan if company revenue >$1M/year)

Verdict: DALL-E for quick, practical images. Midjourney for beautiful, artistic images.

Midjourney vs. Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion wins on:

• Free (if self-hosted)
• Full control (run locally)
• Customizable models
• No content restrictions

Midjourney wins on:

• Ease of use
• Consistent quality
• Out-of-the-box results
• No technical setup

Verdict: Stable Diffusion for techies and hobbyists. Midjourney for creators who want results now.

Midjourney vs. Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly wins on:

• Integration with Adobe tools
• Commercial-safe training data
• Inpainting & editing
• Free tier for Adobe subscribers

Midjourney wins on:

• Better image quality
• More creative results
• Faster iteration
• Community

Verdict: Firefly for Adobe users. Midjourney for everyone else.

Real-World Use Cases

✅ Worth It For:

1. Content Creators

• Blog header images
• YouTube thumbnails
• Social media graphics
• Newsletter visuals

Savings: Stock photos cost $10-50 each. Midjourney = unlimited for $30/month.

2. Marketers

• Ad creative concepts

❌ Not Worth It For:

3. Corporate/Legal Use The licensing terms might not meet your legal department’s requirements.

4. People Who Hate Discord Seriously, if Discord drives you crazy, Midjourney will frustrate you.

Tips to Get Your Money’s Worth

1. Use Relax Mode for Exploration

Generate 20 variations in Relax Mode. Pick the best. Upscale in Fast Mode. Stretches your Fast hours.

2. Learn Prompt Engineering

Spend 2 hours learning effective prompts. It pays off forever.

Midjourney gets you 80% there. Editing tools finish the job.

5. Use Midjourney for Inspiration

Even if you hire a designer, use Midjourney to create mockups and communicate your vision.

Is it worth $30/month?

Ask yourself:

• Do I create visual content weekly?
• Would I otherwise pay for stock photos or a designer?
• Am I willing to learn prompt writing?
• Can I tolerate Discord?

Yes to 3+? Subscribe.
Yes to 1-2? Try the $10 Basic plan first.
No? Stick with free options (DALL-E via Bing, Stable Diffusion online).

My Personal Verdict

I’m keeping my subscription because:

• I create 50-100 images/month for blog posts and social media
• Stock photos would cost $500+/month
• The quality is worth the Discord annoyance
• It sparks creative ideas I wouldn’t have had

I’d cancel if:

• The web interface never improves
• Competitors match the quality
• I stopped creating content regularly

Alternatives to Consider

If Midjourney isn’t right:

• DALL-E 3 ($20/month via ChatGPT Plus) - Good all-rounder
• Adobe Firefly (Free with Adobe subscription) - Best for Adobe users
• Leonardo.ai ($10-30/month) - Midjourney alternative with more control

How to Try Midjourney

1. Join the Midjourney Discord (free trial: 25 images)
2. Use /imagine command with a prompt
3. Generate 10-20 images to test quality
4. If you like it, subscribe to Basic ($10) for a month
5. Upgrade to Standard ($30) if you hit limits

Don’t subscribe until you’ve used the free trial.

Final Thoughts

Midjourney is the best AI image generator for aesthetic quality. But it’s not for everyone.

Subscribe if: You create content regularly and value beautiful visuals.

Skip if: You only need images occasionally or hate Discord.

For me? Worth every penny. It’s saved me thousands in stock photo costs and enables creative ideas I couldn’t execute otherwise.
